History books provide facts and figures, but it is through countless individual and group efforts that we get more interesting and realistic glimpses into the lives and times of the famous and not-so-famous citizens of our world—both past and present.

Plan to attend the Second Annual VCARA Conference to learn how some individuals and institutions create, select, preserve, and provide access to both physical and digital artifacts that exemplify the human experience from their unique perspective.
First, two invited speakers will set the stage for the poster presentations to follow.

  • Caed Aldwych, co-owner and chief builder of “The Road to Deadwood” will explain the rationale and work behind this historically authentic build set in 1876 during the gold rush in the Black Hills of South Dakota.
  • Brande Hall Gex, May 2011 graduate of the Master of Archives and Records Administration (MARA) degree program, will share her research into “Establishing Appraisal Guidelines for Archival Preservation of Virtual Worlds.”

Then, following the two keynote presentations, participants will learn about efforts to preserve stories of people and places, past and present, through poster presentations. Topics include, Virtual Texas: Information Delivery into Virtual Words, 9-11 New York and DC: a Decade of Revival, Bringing Family Stories and Photographs to Life—through Second Life, and Chronicling the Lives of Families who Lived and Worked at 97 Orchard Street from 1863 through the Turn of the 20th Century.

As usual, virtual participation has no limits, but Becca and I would appreciate knowing who intends to join us Tuesday, May 24, 2011. So, please send your rsvp to me at patricia.franks@sjsu.edu or to Becca at rebecca.belz@students.sjsu.edu
